College People Week 2nd-6th June 2008
Good morning,
Only 3 weeks to go till this important annual event which takes place at SFEU. (travel and tourism event is on Monday 2nd June)
It is an opportunity, not only to meet repesentatives from other agencies who have an influence on our FE provision, but also to chat informally among ourselves, compare notes and experiences and get a chance to try out some different teaching methodologies.
I am currently trying to use the Interactive Whiteboard a bit more in my teaching. The students seem to like the visual aspect rather than me droning on! However like all good things it must be used appropriately and in moderation along with other activities.
How time has flown --it just seems no time since College People week last year
Recently I sent out a questionnaire to all travel and tourism subject practitioners, as we are continually trying to meet the needs of subject practitoners and I am conscious that I have not been in touch with everyone this session.
I really would like to hear your thoughts on how I can make your job easier in college so if you have time and are reading this, then either leave me a post or please do complete the questionnaire.
I look forward to seeing you at SFEU on 2nd June
Best wishes
Genevieve

Weekly update
Good afternoon
Does anyone have any idea when we are going to get some warm weather?
Our Guide Edinburgh buses have started the season and poor tourists are huddled together probably not taking anything in but the harsh climate!
The one that goes to Newhaven has blue folk on the upper deck!
Sorry I wasn't here last week but I had an EV due in on the Friday and as I am the only current deliverer of the subject, I had a bit of organising to do.
Anyway he was very pleased with everything and gave us very good verbal feedback so it was worth all the effort.
I am planning a Tourism subject network meeting in August to bring practitioners up to date with my Project outputs and I hope that the mock assessment I am devising will suuport learners and staff in Block 1 of 2008-2009. Date to be confirmed
Please also do not forget College People Week at SFEU this year in June. The subject is Assessment
Programme details will follow in next week's Blog

Weekly update
Hello
I have been very busy this week. I took a group of students to a beautiful location in Tannadice as we had heard that the hotel was almost hewn out of the hill and all the buildings are very tastefully designed.
I wanted them to experience a trip which would fit into the Tourism Unit:
Planning and Sustainable Tourism Development--which was do-able overnight and didn't cost too much.
It matched our expectations and we were lucky with the weather.
What a beautiful part of the world!
A side effect which was also very positive, was developing their team spirit and research skills as I asked them to note lots of things about the hotel operation and the area itself
However 2 days out of college plus 2 days last week at staff development takes its toll and I have been chasing my tail for the last 10 days
hope all those who drop by have a lovely holiday and I'll see you in May

Hello Janet
Hi Janet,
I have replied to you within the original blog posting, but perhaps I should have done so via a new post---I'll check this out with our Blog guru. In the meantime --the reply is in there and a quick summary to say thanks for dropping by and I hope to talk to you again soon

Good afternoon
It is now 1645 and I have been attending a Quality Network event in Glasgow for SVQ Management as I have a few candidates undertaking this programme. As with the Travel and Tourism QN events they are very useful and I particularly like the SQA practice of issuing delegates with a certificate for CPD files.
I wonder what other methods of CPD we should be looking for as travel and Tourism practitioners. Does anyone manage to get into industry (different sectors may be more accessible than others )? If so has it been beneficial? I think even a few days in a term every year, devoted to shadowing employees in industry, would be hugely beneficial for us.
Surely it can't be that difficult to organise as part of our timetables at the beginning of each session. I think also the employers would be able to tell us exactly what they are looking for in our programmes and we can feed all sorts of information to out learners. Once I have completed my GU Project, I would like to explore the feasibility of this exercise in greater detail. Love to hear from you

next Blog
I just pressed the next blog tab and ended up in Spain and then Germany!!
I have been working on my Project this morning
I have written a case study, which I hope will encourage all sorts of skills among learners. I asked a colleague to vet/moderate/verify it and that got me thinking what is the difference between these terms
Anyone got a simple answer???.
My QM cannot attend my network meeting so I am trying to get A.N.Other before I publish the programme--Hope I can??
